Sacred Fire Circle

Another very special and dear elemental addition to our yard. As I was paying our village taxes and arranging for brush pickup, I happened to ask our police chief (it's so lovely having all the parts of the village in one central place) about our local fire/burn laws. He informed me of the necessities which I then incorporated into our circle. I went even further, placing it near one of our outdoor faucets and creating a straight shot to the porch where we keep our tools and buckets for extra water. Even though the fire station is directly across the street (diagonally) from our property, I take all the precautions I can! This space has proven to be extremely well-placed.

I was grateful to have this fire circle to call into service when I held vigil for a dear friend who was passing from an illness. A group of her friends and loved ones fell into the habit of lighting a candle for her each night (our way of connecting and sending out love to her and her family) during the last month she was with us. On two of those nights, I lit a fire in our Sacred Fire Circle for her (and all of us).

The Fire Circle is updated in 2017

In 2017 I reworked the Sacred Fire Circle so that i had only stones around the perimeter. A couple of years before, I'd added the pea gravel over cardboard and weed-suppressing cloth over the mulch. As expected, the mulch became a lovely medium for all sorts of plants to grow in and provided me with wasted weeding time. I was also able at that time to gather three more stones for altar benches. I also had to add an inner circle of upright bricks because heavy rains tended to wash soil into the center pit.

I love being able to have my sacred grass drying on the stone of the Sacred Fire Circle. In 2017, I also let my sweet potatoes cure in the sun of the Fire Circle. Below, you'll find photos of kittehs and other wildlife enjoying the Circle.

This photo, taken by our son, Kellin, is our youngest son enjoying a June fire before the redux. Look closely at the corner of the garage to see the Japanese barberry removed later in the year.
